Institutionalizing Climate Change into Decision-Making (a Climate Week NY event)

Climate change already impacts how the world around us functions, and it will increasingly continue to do so well into the future.  We design programs and products, build cities and infrastructure, and run businesses and institutions under a set of assumptions that the planet’s climate systems will behave in a predictable, dependable way.  When those models are wrong, our designs fail, resulting in economic harm and public health catastrophes.

Understanding and Operationalizing the Findings of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (1:30pm – 4:00pm)

In 2017, the Michael Bloomberg chaired Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures published their findings on a disclosure framework that publicly traded companies should be following in providing information to investors, lenders, insurers and other stakeholders.  These findings are applicable to government agencies and higher education institutions, who are facing increasing scrutiny from many of these same external stakeholders.  With an emphasis on incorporating climate change more effectively into governance, strategic planning and risk management, public and private sector organizations are increasingly grappling with understanding and operationalizing this guidance.

Launch Meeting: Maryland Climate Academy

We've all seen the substantial havoc and destruction of hurricanes, droughts and wildfires across the United States.  The 2016 Ellicott City flood and ongoing nuisance flooding throughout the eastern shore is a call for Maryland leaders to institutionalize climate change into decision-making in local/state government and critical infrastructure sectors. 

On May 21, participants will discuss a vision for the nation's first statewide climate academy, a joint venture between the State of Maryland and the Association of Climate Change Officers. 

Additionally, the meeting hosts will present a vision for establishing a collaborative network of local/state government and infrastructure sector leaders focused upon knowledge exchange, cohort learning and resource sharing.

Maryland State of the Coast Conference

Maryland’s Inaugural State of the Coast Conference

ACCO is a partner to the Maryland State of the Coast Conference and will be producing and supporting content throughout the event.

Maryland’s first conference on healthy ecosystems, resilient communities and vibrant economies, titled State of the Coast Conference - Connecting People, Innovation and Opportunity, will take place May 21-23, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge.

With an annual economic contribution of more than $200 billion that supports 1.6 million jobs, the health of Maryland’s coast and its resources are inextricably connected to the health of our state’s economy and environment. Today, our coastal communities are faced with environmental shifts such as climate change, sea level rise and the increasingly significant impacts of catastrophic weather events. This makes the already challenging tasks of cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay, safeguarding people and infrastructure, and facilitating commerce even more complex.

The event will provide a forum for thoughtful and insightful discussion as to what has occurred, what is happening now, and how that knowledge should frame planning and management moving forward. With the most pressing challenges facing our coast, coastal habitats and communities, what could be more appropriate then a conference focused on connecting people, innovation and opportunity?

Join public and private sector participants for an interdisciplinary forum to exchange timely and relevant information on the dynamic conditions of Maryland’s coastal communities, environment, and economy, and apply that information to existing and future restoration and protection efforts, policies and decision-making. We hope to bring together the unique blend of people involved in policy, science, strategy, business, and on-the-ground restoration and management.
